The first Computer Class was set up in 2013 by Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore). A big group of volunteers from this bank came and brought all the equipment with them to help in fitting out the class rooms. It all happened very quickly in just a few days. It amazed us! Rosanna was the one who played the key role in facilitating this event. At that time, the first 8 computers were installed in the room with other facilities such as LCD projector, high speed internet and camera equipment. This allowed the teachers to run classes in far more connected and innovative ways.
We initially started to use these computers in teaching English, Maths and Computer software skills by using programs such as Learning Ladder for English and Math, Microsoft Word and Excel Spreadsheets
In 2014, we were thrilled that Standard Chartered came back and set up another bigger classroom, where 28 computers were installed. Now each day we have young people from the community coming to study. Each course lasts for six months and after one course finishes we select another group of students to come and study. The computer classes run daily in the afternoon – from Monday to Friday where we have 3 separate classes scheduled. The teaching is enthusiastically led by Sok Dina who is a university graduate in IT.
We have now had literally hundreds of children and young adults come to study in our computer labs. All of them were from the local community.
The generous support from Standard Chartered Bank has allowed us to help so many children and young adults who do not otherwise have the opportunity to go to schools that provide access to these critical life skills. The children who attend our courses are now better enabled to participate more effectively in the modern world. Through the commitment of the teachers, we have seen wonderful improvements in the student’s performances.
